Which Saddlebags? - Celithemis amanda
Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, USA
August 7, 2012
This Saddlebags was beside the boardwalk on the Tarkiln Bayou Trail in the Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park. I have no idea which one it is. Can anyone help?

Thanks, John and Jane!
Thanks for the ID, John and Jane! This is a new dragonfly for me, and it's also the first report from Escambia County, FL.

Amanda's Pennant?
I do not have much experience with Florida Odonata, but this actually closely resembles the images of a female Amanda's Pennant (Celithemis amanda) in my Dragonflies and Damselflies of the East guide by Dennis Paulson. So, it may not be a Saddlebags? Do you have that guide? If so, check out that species and see what you think. Hopefully others with more experience than I will also comment.

Thanks for the tip!
Well, you can learn something new every day! I’m actually from California, and there are no Pennants in my area, so that thought hadn’t even crossed my mind. It certainly does look like the photos of Amanda’s Pennant -- which would explain why I couldn’t figure out which Saddlebags -- and the location is consistent. I do not have the guide you mention, but I hope someone with more experience will comment.
