Black and red ant 0.25 inch - Camponotus decipiens
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
August 11, 2012
Size: 1/4 Inch excluding legs
I've found a couple of these in an upstairs bathroom. I'm hoping that they're not carpenter ants or another destructive species. After some google image searches, I'm getting pretty worried.

Moved from Camponotus sayi.

Moved
They are in the carpenter ant genus, but this species only occupies preformed spaces in wood, and do not excavate, as do some other species.
