Hickory Hairstreak - Satyrium caryaevorus

Hickory Hairstreak - Satyrium caryaevorus
Silver Creek, Ontario, Canada
July 30, 2012
Edit: Thank you for the information! Sounds like Hickory Hairstreak after all is said and done!
Original Comment: I was wondering if this was a banded or a hickory hairstreak. I'm thinking it's a banded, but I am not so good with these.

Any help would be great!
thanks,

David

I'm leaning towards
Hickory Hairstreak(Satyrium caryaevorus)

I think you're right
After having a second look at the comparison section and images, I think you're right that it's a Hickory Hairstreak. Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm thinking Banded
The Also See section of the Hickory Hairstreak guidepage explains the differences.

thanks!
Thanks for linking me to the Also See section - it is very helpful.
In fact, after looking at it, I think I came to the opposite conclusion I originally had - I'm thinking Hickory Hairstreak. Banded hairstreaks are supposed to have blue patches that only slightly extend beyond the adjacent orange patch (and this extends quite far), and the offset top spot of the band of spots on the hindwing is supposed to be thinner than the spots on the partial second band (and this one is much thicker, though it is hard to see in the photo). The orange patch is also supposed to be as large or larger than the black spot capping it, and in my photo the orange patch is equal to the black spot, but the black is very prominent nonetheless. Altogether, I think the features point to Hickory(unless it's a hybrid or something haha)
