ID for a red wasp with blue wings - Trogomorpha trogiformis - Female
Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, USA
August 7, 2012
This red wasp with blue wings (really bright blue at some angles) was in shrubs beside the Wet Prairie Trail in the Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park. It was quite twitchy, and although I took quite a few photos, they are rather blurry. I don’t know if the photo is clear enough to make an identification, but any information will be greatly appreciated!

Red wasp with blue wings
I am in the dog track Rd area and was in my back yard watching my dogs and chickens playing. I looked at our privacy fence and it looked as if something was floating along the fence, maybe dangling from a spider web. I walked over to look closer and one of these wasps was carrying a funnel web spider. Wings were vividly blue.

Cool to see!
Yes, the wings are amazingly blue when you see the wasp in "person". Dog Track Rd is quite near to where I spotted this wasp. Have fun spotting insects in Pensacola!

Thanks!
Thanks for the ID! This is the first report from the Florida panhandle, although there is report from nearby Mobile, Alabama. Several other reports also note the twitchiness of this wasp.
