Huge Bee
There are similar bees in my area which is the state of Rhode Island in the U.S.
I learned through BugGuide.net that my photos, similar to this photo you've submitted, is called a Carpenter Bee. The best field mark is that they have no fuzz on the black area. Rather, it is a shiny black, as can be seen in your photo. they basically do what Bumble Bees do: pollinate flowers. I too was surprised at their size! With Rhode Island as the smallest state in the U.S., I will add that RI is located in southern New England. I am very much an amateur in identifying insects, so I
would definitely wait to receive a response from those who are experienced in this
field of identifying insects, spiders, etc.

Carpenter Bee
Thanks Marcia!
I assume this one was a female...... head was large and no white spot.
Cheers Terry

Correct again!
Note very fuzzy hind legs; males indeed have white areas on the face and enormous bugged-out eyes.
