Giant beetle flying at dusk - Prionus californicus - male

Giant beetle flying at dusk - Prionus californicus - Male
Tuttle Creek, near Lone Pine, Owens Valley, Inyo County, California, USA
June 3, 2012
Size: BL: 38mm, Antennae 33mm
Dorsal view, courtesy of the magic of flash photography...it was taken in the dark, as were all the photos in this series.

Note the three sharp points on each side of the pronotum, a diagnostic feature of this species. The antennae were long and thick!
