Giant beetle flying at dusk - Prionus californicus - male

Giant beetle flying at dusk - Prionus californicus - Male
Tuttle Creek, near Lone Pine, Owens Valley, Inyo County, California, USA
June 3, 2012
Size: BL: 38mm, Antennae 33mm
Here with my thumb for scale. Thumbnail is ~15 mm, and a bit closer to the camera...so the beetle "appears" somewhat smaller than its true size (i.e. that of a small watermelon, and almost as big as the fish I caught in the creek a few minutes later...size of a submarine! :-).
