Tree Cricket - Oecanthus nigricornis

Tree Cricket - Oecanthus nigricornis
Petit-Cap, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada
August 16, 2012
Size: est. 20mm
On marram grass seed head about 1 meter off ground on sand dune. I believe only O. nigricornis and O. fultoni are known from New Brunswick.

These are very nice photos of O. forbesi
On most tree crickets, the antennal markings are essential. However, Forbes' tree crickets almost always have yellowish heads (especially the females) - and always do have those black-maroon ventral abdomen markings. O. nigricornis would have more black on the head and pronotum, O. fultoni has no black at all.

Forbes' tree crickets are expanding in range. I suspect their ovipositing in plants is a factor - such as when plants are moved over borders.

Thanks so much
Thank-you so much, Nancy! This would represent a first record of this species in New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada. I visit the dune where I photographed this beauty several times per week and will keep hoping for additional photo opportunities. THOROUGHLY enjoying your wonderful website!
