Black and White Dr. Seuss Cricket - Rosalia funebris

Black and White Dr. Seuss Cricket - Rosalia funebris
Astoria, Oregon, USA
July 22, 2006
Size: 4 inches
This was taken in Astoria, Oregon. It flew in the window of our friend's SUV. It is the freakiest looking bug I have ever seen. Looks like something Dr. Seuss dreamed up. This is a port town, so it could have traveled on a boat but I can assure you it is not a bug that is prevelant in the Pacific Northwest. Any ides?

B&W Dr. Suess Cricket
I just found one yesterday. Amazing creature. He landed on a chair here in the San Juan Islands. Previous posts say this bug is rare to the West if so so i have no idea how he got to our house. The Island I am on is only 1.5 miles long and 1 mi. wide. Any ideas of it's migration path would be beneficial.

We found one of these in Rura
We found one of these in Rural France yesterday! It was eating the wood next to our pool!

Rosalia funebris
This is a Longhorned Beetle, Cerambycidae.

Rosalia funebris - the Banded Alder Borer.

I never get tired of seeing pictures of this one! Nice find.

Longhorned Beetle
We have never seen anything like this. Is it common in the Pacific Northwest, or did it hitchhike in from some exotic destination?

Native
It's a native species, one of the real crowd-pleasers. Here in the East we have the Cottonwood Borer, which is similarly striking.

I've placed this on the proper species page. Click on the "Data" tab higher on the page to see when and where the Banded Alder Borer has been reported on BugGuide.
