Closeup tail end - Chorthippus - Male
Kouchibouguac National Park, trail near Callendars Beach, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada

Is this the male? Will add more images of different individuals, from various angles. I now have 8 specimens from two sites in the park, as of Aug 16th. Will get more and look for more sites.

Yes, this is male
The blunt rounded (or cone-shaped - depending on species) subgenital plate caps the end of the abdomen in the males. In the females you will see four horny ovipositor "valves" held tightly together here instead; they tend to give the abdomen a pointed appearance. Usually females are larger and bulkier, with proportionately longer and thicker abdomens, but often with thinner legs. It is common, again depending on species, for the females to have proportionately shorter wings as well (sometimes dramatically shorter).

As long as you can see the end of the abdomen, it is usually easy to tell gender.
