"spider ball" - unkn species - Male Female
Las Cienegas, Pima County, Arizona, USA
August 16, 2012
Have never seen a "spider ball" of hatchlings like this. Wonder whether these are Orb Weavers or something else?

Moved from Fishing Spiders.

Nursery Web Spiders (Pisauridae)
Yes, this level is best. I just realized with this being in AZ these might even be Tinus peregrinus spiderlings.

Moved
Moved from Spiders. I agree (but we may all be wrong) but they not only look like a match but I have seen similar nests with adult females near them.

Ooops, did you want this up one level?

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Nice spiderling ball. From your observations of the area what do you think it might be?

The
web wasn't very orb-weaver like, but I don't know what else would be in the vegetation like that. I did see a few Argiope aurantia around - common down here after the monsoons get going. But there are other orb-weavers around too. Really don't know what these little guys are.

nursery web spiderlings?
Do you think they could be nursery web spiderlings?

There are
definitely Dolomedes around and this ball was no more than a foot or 2 from the creek that is Empire Gulch on the Las Cienegas NCA. Didn't know Dolomedes were a type of nursery web spider. Looks like a probable match. I did photograph an adult Dolomedes triton in the same drainage last fall and saw bunches of them while we were surveying fish populations.
