Dusty Tick in Sunol Regional Wilderness

Dusty Tick in Sunol Regional Wilderness
Sunol Regional Wilderness, Alameda County, California, USA
August 19, 2012
Size: small
This tick is very different in appearance from the common Deer Ticks that I usually encounter in Sunol Regional Wilderness. It was very thin when I squeezed it, so I don't think it was engorged. It was quite healthy, moved quite quickly.

state abbreviations are redundant (state has a separate field)

Soft tick
Argasidae, not sure what genus.

interesting... Argasidae are
interesting... Argasidae are "soft ticks", as opposed to "hard ticks" such as Deer Ticks... now that I've read a little about them, I can guess why I haven't seen them before; whereas hard ticks wait on brush stems for something to come by and brush them off, Argasidae prefer to just hang out in deer or cattle nesting sites, and wait for hosts to come to them! I guess that cleared spot where I was sitting may have been such a bedding site; it certainly was soft! (shiver...) I'm glad I didn't decide to lay down and doze for awhile...

Cropped and moved for expert attention.
