Painted Lady Butterfly - Vanessa cardui

Painted Lady Butterfly - Vanessa cardui
North Billerica, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
August 20, 2012
Size: 3" wide
I stopped to make a deposit at a bank in North Billerica for work and noticed that the flower garden along the edge of the parking lot, mostly zinnias, was full of colorful butterflies! On closer inspection, I realized that the butterflies were all the same. I believe they are Painted Lady butterflies - Vanessa cardui. In that small space, maybe 5'x 10', I counted about 25. The very next morning, I found another large group of them, maybe 50 this time, in my backyard in Southern New Hampshire! They were feeding on loosestrife blossoms. Could they be preparing for migration?
