Synanthedon scitula - Dogwood Borer - Synanthedon scitula

Synanthedon scitula - Dogwood Borer - Synanthedon scitula
Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
August 21, 2012
Size: about 1.5 cm
When I first saw this on the mountain mint in my back yard I didn't imagine that it was a moth. It wasn't until I looked at the pictures that I realized it wasn't some odd sort of wasp. Based on what I see here, I'm guessing that this is a Dogwood Borer (Synanthedon scitula) but I'd like someone who knows these things to confirm that. I'll post a second photo from a different angle.
