. We're not clear how to separate the larva of pulverulenta from assimilis, but it looks like pulverulenta is the northwest species.

Melanchra pulverulenta
Thank you John and Jane for the input. It might not be a positive answer, but I can now call it something besides "Black and Yellow Caterpillar".
I take a lot of pictures of all types of wildlife, insects, plants, flowers, scenery, etc. up here in Alaska. I like to catalog everything with a name. Sometimes my books just don't do it for me and I rely on kind folks like you in assisting me. I will now research the M pulverulenta and assimilis and then choose between the two. The added photo by Matt was a big help.
