Prenolepis flushed out by a mole - Prenolepis imparis - female

Prenolepis flushed out by a mole - Prenolepis imparis - Female
Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
August 13, 2012
Size: 2.75 mm, 5.5mm
Walking across a lawn, I noticed a bustling reddish haze on bare soil pushed up by a mole. A closer look revealed these ants evacuating their nest after being disturbed by a mole. I was surprise to see three queens as I had thought this species strictly monogyne. Younger, paler workers are in their fat-storing "lipergates" phase. At the moment, they are waxing, fattening up through the fall foraging season. Next season they'll lose weight as their stored fat becomes converted to glandular larval food used to raise the single brood of each year. As the fat is used up, they become darker and eventually will become foragers. The two measurements refer to workers and queens, respectively.
