from Slater and Baranowski, Lygaeidae of Florida, 1990
Sweet (1964) reported on the biology of this species in Connecticut. He found it to be "highly specific to fully exposed old overdrained morainic sites dominated by Andropogon scoparium." It occurs especially where areas of bare gravelly soil are present, such as gravel pits. It is thus an insect that prefers hot and dry habitats.

Brachyptery is common, suggesting that the habitats, while "temporary" must be relatively long-lasting. C. mavortius, in the field, resembles a large black ant and, as noted by Sweet (1964), this resemblance is enhanced by rapid, jerky "ant-like" movements. Nymphs are striking ant mimics.
