Identification

Authors differ in opinion as to whether P. hesperus and P. coloradus represent a single species or two; mostly they have been considered as different. The two differ in distribution, and in proportion of the last abdominal segment of the males (in P. hesperus about as long as wide; in P. coloradus about two times as long as wide). P. hesperus is apparently found in west Texas, southern New Mexico, and west from southern Arizona and southwestern Utah into California and Oregon. P. coloradus occurs northeast of this and north to about South Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho. The two probably come into contact, and perhaps blend in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.
