Unknown (Scale?) Bug from CT - Grylloprociphilus imbricator

Unknown (Scale?) Bug from CT - Grylloprociphilus imbricator
Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA
August 25, 2012
Size: 7 mm
These bugs were coating the trunk of a small sapling, possible beach or maple, but I don't think it was alder. There was a lot of gray stuff underneath them on the forest floor, possibly frass. I'm assuming they're some kind of scale bug, but haven't found a particularly good match yet.

someone posted these the other day and I thought they were scale too, but they are beach aphids (I think)

awesome
Thanks so much! Looks like a perfect match. I wonder how detrimental they are to the tree.
