Eristalis stipator - female

Eristalis stipator - Female

On a Shasta Daisy in garden.

See Insects of Cedar Creek image of E. latifrons here:

I'm not certain that the dark pattern on the wings is exactly the same.

Cole & Schlinger (The Flies of Western North America, U of C Press, 1968) list this species as having been "...reported from Mexico to B.C., east to Florida."

Update, 01/21/2013: This is E. stipator Osten Sacken. The above mentioned name, E. latifrons is considered an invalid junior synonym. Have taken a number of specimens since this post. See also

Moved from Eristalis.

Probably right
Shall we keep it at genus level until further confirmation?

Yes,
I think so.

Very nice photos. (Timely, too.)
I shot one of these - badly - this morning and was hoping some of my photos were good enough for an ID. Now, here's the same insect, nicely done. (Mine was on buckwheat and stayed off the top layer, that is to say, out of the good light.)

Just checked the link and things got even better! First photo I saw - Eristalis tenax - is another I was trying to ID. Thanks loads, Hartmut.

Update: New (?) synonym is Eristalis stipator
