Size: 16mm
There was an infestation of these larvae on Red alder on the old grade road along the river. When the wax was wiped away, they were greenish.

Thanks Ross, A sawfly larva had actually crossed my mind but I had no resource to check. I had previously seen another species of sawfly infestation on alders, but the larva was smooth, black and yellow banded and coiled its abdomen. Appreciate the ID.
