Witch Hazel leaf gall - Cameraria hamameliella

Witch Hazel leaf gall - Cameraria hamameliella
Antrim, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 28, 2012

Moved
Moved from Unidentified Galls.
Well in that case...

Cameraria
This looks like the beginnings of a Cameraria leaf mine, and I can just make out two larvae inside. There's no Cameraria recorded from alder though--are you sure that's what it was? There are Camerarias on various other things in the birch family.

It wasn't a birch
but now that I looked it up, I'm pretty sure it was a witch hazel. The underside of the leaf didn't have any marking at all.
