Variable Dancer, Argia fumipennis violacea. This subspecies is sometimes called a Violet Dancer, for obvious reasons. They're quite spectacular!

I've never
seen one either but I have Ed Lam's "Damselflies of the Northeast" which made a determination of Variable dancer really easy :-)
