You can read more about these western green Birg Grasshoppers
in the "Info" sections under
S. lineata venusta
and under
S. shoshone
. They have had a confusing history in the literature, but they are usually easy to distinguish. Took me several years wandering around in the field before I got it straight in my head.
S. shoshone
and
S. lineata
behave as different species (they occur together and stay different in many places), but they apparently can hybridize and make healthy babies when kept in a cage (but are the babies sterile? - an interesting question to investigate further). Green
S. albolineata
look similar too.

A bird grasshopper, genus [i]
A bird grasshopper, genus
Schistocerca
. Looks to me like a Green Bird Grasshopper (
Schistocerca shoshone
), but could be another species, as many look very similar. I can't really see either hind tibia for color, but Green Bird Grasshoppers' often (or always maybe) are bright pink. You may also want to look at pictures of White-lined Bird Grasshoppers (
Schistocerca albolineata
) and Spotted Bird Grasshoppers (
Schistocerca lineata
)for comparisons to the one in your picture. I'm no expert on Bird Grasshoppers - especially for your neck of the woods - so it's likely one of our resident experts will be able to tell you exactly which species this is.

I just happened to review this image, and my initial identification as a Green Bird Grasshopper. This is most definitely NOT a
S. shoshone
, which is obvious not only because it was moved to the Spotted Bird Grasshopper (
Schistocerca lineata
) species pages, but because of the very distinct dorsal line running the length of the body.
S. shoshone
does not usually (if ever) have this contrasting line down its back. I'm not sure how I missed this at first, but that's why BugGuide is fortunate to have Dave Ferguson, who doesn't miss this type of diagnostic criteria.
