Size: 16 mm
This wasp was flying an inch or two above a patch of sandy two-track dirt road in the Hercules Glades, Mark Twain National Forest.

Psorthapis...
probably sanguinea. This is a female, males of Psorthaspis are all black and very hairy.

Are you sure it's a Mutillid?
I would have guessed a Pompilid of some variety.

 
Pompilid?
You may be right! I tend to "see" mutillids, because I'm so fond of them. Thank goodness for BG! I've edited the post accordingly, and added a photo of the abdomen.
