A male Field Cricket in genus Gryllus
It is very difficult to tell species apart from photos. This one looks a lot like G. pennsylvanicus, but I'm not sure if that species is even in southern Arizona.

Do you remember what the song sounded like? Fairly continuous trill, a chirping, or ???

Moved from ID Request.

Too much activity
at our bug sheet, so it wasn't making much sound. It made a few feeble, brief chirps...and I don't remember what the distant crickets sounded like that he was responding to. I should have recorded them. Should I get a recording, is there a repository similar to xeno-canto.org for bugs?

There are recordings at Singing Insects of North America
under each species, but the treatment of species there is still a bit minimal. I don't know if there is a repository anywhere. Perhaps the University of Florida has one??? The links at SINA don't work at the moment, but hopefully will again soon (?).

I have a hunch that G. pennsylvanicus is in the southwest, particularly in the mountains, but I've been hoping for David Weissman to publish his work on the genus so we call all see what he's come up with.

me too!
A few Gryllus specimens I've collected from the Huachucas have ended up in his hands and apparently they fell into two undescribed species, so I'm definitely waiting to see what ends up where.
