Size: 3 inch?
I noticed that when I got close it would let go of the top set of hands/arms things and then flick a portion of it's body towards me as if it was some kinda weapon.

looks like
Isoparce cupressi..but will wait to hear from Ryan
it also looks like it may be shedding from 4th to 5th instar from the way it holds it head and the size..
