Several of these larvae looked to be feeding on Buprestid larvae under bark of an oak log with tight bark.

Probably Asilidae
I don't think the previous comments are correct...I think this is an Orthorrhapha, probably Asilidae, because some of them live in rotting wood. They are also predaceous. I don't think it is a cyclorrhaphan as there is too much sclerotization in the head area, and the black structure visible in the first thoracic segment looks like tentorial rods rather than a cephalopharyngeal skeleton.. A more lateral view of the posterior segment would be necessary to confirm Asilidae

update: Valery Korneyev says this is not a 'nematoceran' or an 'otrhorrhaphan'; options include predatory subcortical lonchaeids & pallopterids [no external features to separate the larvae]

 
I brought it home along with several Buprestid larvae to try and rear the fly and find out what it is. Should this be moved to the Tephritoidea page?
