European Earwig at wasp chamber - Forficula auricularia - male

European Earwig at wasp chamber - Forficula auricularia - Male
Mount Pleasant, Racine County, Wisconsin, USA
September 15, 2012
This earwig was on a small potted Tamarack tree which has been on a third floor patio for 2 years. It had been sleeved June through August. I found this earwig ?exploring an empty wasp chamber vs ?finishing up a meal of the larvae

I don't know enough about timing of the life cycle of the wasp that would have been in the chamber - especially given the tree had been sleeved Jun thru Aug - to know if this was scavenging for remnants of food matter vs being the critter than drilled this side hole to get at the larvae.

I also had 5 pine tree crickets (O. pini) in there while it was sleeved; and there have also been Western Conifer Leaf-Footed bugs on this tree.

Just curious about who may have stolen the larvae - and what type it had been (based on the host plant and shape of the chamber).
