What is this? - Sirex nigricornis - Female
Philadelphia, Kensington County, Pennsylvania, USA

Size: approx. 1.5 inches long
These bugs have recently shown up in our house. They seem to mostly crawl around, but they do have wings and will fly short distances if disturbed. They have an orange abdomen that is hidden in the photo. I will often find one crawling on me, sometimes on my hand, while sitting on the couch. Very creepy....

Siricidae
Sirex nigricornis Fabriciius. Larvae live and feed in conifers, most commonoly pines. Usually attacks dead or weakened trees. They must be emerging from a pine log or stump nearby. They will not go into structural wood in buildings.

concern
Should I be concerned that these have been showing up inside? I would say I see anywhere from 3 to 6 per day. What can I do to get rid of them? I see that they lay eggs in trees. Would they also lay eggs in wood within the house?

No....no indoor fireplace. I
No....no indoor fireplace. I do have wood stacked outside though, for a fire pit. That wouldn't explain them coming in. I did just get a dog, and we've been leaving our sliding door open more often for her.....I thought that might be a possibility.
