Tick Larva - Amblyomma

Tick Larva - Amblyomma
Kilmarnock, Lancaster County, Virginia, USA
September 14, 2012
Size: < 0.5 mm
Apologies for the bad picture quality, but this was digiscoped with an 8 megapixel camera held up to a microscope. These are wretched little parasites that cause irritation and welts. At the moment, I have 58 bites on one foot and 50 bites on the other, some of which were caused by the critters pictured here. This occurred while I was wearing jeans tucked into thick wool socks. It didn't stop them at all. It is by far the most intense itching I've ever felt, particularly around the ankle and behind the toes; it wouldn't even be possible to sleep without the aid of some Hydrocortisone and Benadryl. These are of course just the larval stage of this species; they will have 8 legs when they are mature.
They are much easier to remove from the skin than adult ticks are.
