Will in a mountain pass, this giant Robber Fly - the biggest I'd ever seen in the field - flew in. 7'ooo ft. in elevation

This is Pritchardomyia vespoi
This is Pritchardomyia vespoides (a female); closer to 1" long -- but still a big fly. Kernville is about 2500 ft. in elev.; do you remember exactly where you found this fly?

I didn't see any locale details posted for this one, so I'll volunteer my own. The el primo collecting locale is the Pine Creek turnout about 1 mile East of Kennedy Meadows in late June (also, the Chimney Peak meadows at the top of the closed Chimney Peak Road). I'm sure Greg (B.) has told you about this area. Unfortunately, the once flourishing population has dwindled considerably. I suspect over collecting - commercial collecting. This is a popular stop. Pogonosoma ridingsi, Andrenosoma, Callinicus, Myelaphus and even a couple of Laphria have been taken here. The willow-sapling creek area and the adjacent fire-burn hillside are an oasis for asilidae. If you plan to collect there, email me and I will send specific details and dates.
