Unknown dragonfly - Sympetrum vicinum

Unknown dragonfly - Sympetrum vicinum
Windham, New York, USA
August 9, 2006
I found several of these dragonflies perched in the wildflowers around the edges of a small pond. The pond is located in Windham, NY, which is in the northern Catskills. While the area is generally in the mountains the pond is only at about 1800' above sea level.

I think....
it is a Yellow-legged Meadowhawk. (Sympetrum vicinum) Hope someone else verifies my ID.

I think so too...
If this dragonfly was quite small, particularly, it could be an young male, not yet turned red (they're quite "golden" and very hairy looking.) The shape's right, if the size is right.

The female.....
has a very prominent ovipositor on S8 but unfortunately, the foliage hides this area on the photo. Young male is likely a good call. :)

It was small
It was actually quite small. Not as small as an amberwing but in that range.

Yup
They are less than 2 inches in length.
