Moved from ID Request. Marked as female on the basis of distance between eyes. Later, I learned that one doesn't even need to look that closely. In this species, males have black heads; females have orange heads.

Stratiomyidae: Inopus rubriceps. This species was introduced from Australia to California around 1948

Imported soldier fly?
Resembles the immigrant Inopus rubriceps.
