Temnoscheila virescens

Size: 17 mm
I need help with this ID, please. I collected it on a salt panne; it appears to be a wood boring type beetle (has large strong mandibles), but I have no idea what suborder (or family, genus, etc.) to place it in.

Temnoscheila.
I just happened to be here as I eat lunch:-) This is is a bark-gnawing beetle in the genus Temnoscheila (hope I'm spelling that correctly). I think we have other images in the guide, but this one is spectacular! Might be T. chlorida. I know we have T. virescens in Oregon, and they are not green, but blue-green.

they come in all shades of green and blue, it seens

Yes
Temnoscheila virescens. Only it and T. acuta occur in Mississippi and it has fine punctures on the head as seems to be the situation in the picture.

I'll move this to the Temnoscheila page but leave it as sp. The salt panne where I collected it is adjacent to a pine barren with trees that were pushed over in Katrina.
