White with black on purple - Pontia occidentalis - male

White with black on purple - Pontia occidentalis - Male
Lassen Volcanic National Park, Tehama County, California, USA
August 30, 2012

I'm going to say "close", but no cigar
I'm pretty sure this is Pontia occidentalis, and it is male. Definitely belongs in the "Batterfly" category though (I need to remember that! - could be a fly in a kitchen too though :0). He doesn't look old though, so maybe it was a bird attack (?).

Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).

Thanks for straightening me out, David.
Well, I did get the battered part right. Sometimes I refer to these as "on sale" butterflies, i.e 20% off.

Brokeoff butterfly
An appropriate find from Brokeoff Mountain.

Checkered White, female
I would classify this as a batterfly.
