Verrucosa arenata - male

Verrucosa arenata - Male
Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas, USA
August 4, 2006
Size: 10mm ?
Found sitting under this leaf in a pocket of webbing.

The legs look too spiny to us for a
crab spider, so we're going to suggest orb weaver, male. And once we're there the only likely candidate is Verrucosa. There is an image in the guide here that looks just like yours, but unfortunately it's not much help since we probably put it there! The pattern of tubercles on the abdomen matches Verrucosa perfectly, so we think we might actually be correct. Let's see what Jeff or Don says.
Nice image! It will be a great addition to the guide!

Verrucosa
It certainly looks like your image, and I can see now on mine the mysterious dark things on either side of the face may very well be male palps, are certainly male palps. My one hesitation is that this spider was the size of the female Verrucosa, and generally one thinks of orb-weaver males as being very tiny compared to the females. But the more I look at it, the more the abdomen seems to fit exactly. I think you're absolutely right.
Thank you.
