Host is right

Maybe this is indeed an old, dried-up wool sower, a fuzzy stem gall on white oak. The location of this specimen on the stem of a white oak would fit well with that assessment.

Where on sapling?

Hi Inger, where on the sapling was this clump located? On a leaf? Stem?

Hi John - I should go back and try to get a better pix. They were usually on the crotch of a branch as I recall. The underside that looks almost like seeds is where it was attached around the stem. We saw quite a few of them in a patch of oak seedlings ranging from 1 to 4 ft tall under some very large savanna oaks at MacRae Park, DSM.

Spider egg sac?

On the existing photos, I see silken threads exposed in the clump - I wonder if this is some kind of spider egg sac? Or maybe moth-related?
