Meadowhawk
Either Autumn (Sympetrum vicinum) or Ruby (Sympetrum rubicundulum). Maybe someone will narrow it down.

meadowhawk
it has black legs so not Autumn. Ruby would have a darker face. White-faced is what I'd call it.

Meadowhawk
Thanks guys, obviously it is tricky to specify species without the insect, but I have to wonder if it isn't a Sympetrum obtrusum, white faced Meadowhawk, the photo certainly shows a light/white face which mature males of this species have. it doesn't seem to me to be an Autumn (sympetrum vicinum) because the legs don't look at all yellow, course that could just be the angle I was photographing from, and the Ruby's appear to have slightly darker bodies, though I understand there is species variety. I think I will just reference it as a Meadowhawk dragonfly and let it go at that.

Take-back!
None of my reference books even had a White-faced in them. After looking at pics on line, however, I'd have to agree with the others. Now looking for additional books! =^)

Take-back
Ah very frustrating to have a book that leaves stuff out, I usually run into that with trees, the best books on trees are also fairly expensive and not easy to come by, so far I don't own one that makes me happy.
