Found this mantis a couple weeks ago. I live in California, in a high desert region.

This confuses me:
Isn't Iris also the genus of the flower? (for example - Iris gigantaerulea) I didn't realize that scientific names from two different kingdoms could have the same genus... Anyway, great shot though!

I think the ICZN tries to prevent this from the same kingdoms, but not overall.

 
It is no problem if one organ
It is no problem if one organism is an animal and the other is a plant, but two plants or two animals with the same genus name is prohibited by the code. There are several exaples, like Zebrina, a snail and a plant...
