Graphocephala ? - Graphocephala coccinea

Graphocephala ? - Graphocephala coccinea
Red Butte Gardens, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
October 14, 2012
I noticed this little guy while taking photos of another insect. I almost didn't check it out, thinking it to be a plain green leafhopper. Glad I did, it is beautiful!

Graphocephala
This is a new state record - in fact, whatever species it is, it is far outside its natural range (eastern states, SE Canada). The only ones found in the west are G. fennahi on planted rhododendrons on the west coast, and G. versuta in the extreme southwest; and this is not either of those species. I presume that it was accidentally imported to Red Butte Gardens on ornamental plants.

So interesting!
Thanks for that insight.

Read the info page...
...HERE. The Size and See Also fields will provide some information about getting these identified to species. It seems that the exact size is rather important. I have one or two of these in limbo right now...

Great picture!

Thanks Ron!
I wish there was a way to measure these all little guys out in the field. If only they would sit still for me! Thank you for the reference page.

Indirect measuring
Sometimes there are enough "landmarks" on the twig or leaf you photograph them on that you can put a ruler on it after they escape, take a picture of that, and do some arithmetic later to deduce the bug's size. I carry a sawed-off transparent millimeter ruler. A 6-cm length of ruler fits easily in a pants pocket.

What a
great tip. Thanks!
