Antlion - Brachynemurus nebulosus - female

Antlion - Brachynemurus nebulosus - Female
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 27, 2006
Size: 22 mm body length
Found at my porch light. Looks identical to Lynette's image from about 60 miles south of here:

I thought Dr. Oswald might have an idea on this one--thanks.
Given this image:

is a male, mine must be of a female.

#71468 Identification -- Brachynemurus nebulosus
This is the antlion Brachynemurus nebulosus (Olivier, 1811).

Thank you.
Thank you for visiting, John, and sharing your expertise! We have lots of magnificent Neuroptera images, and, until now, nobody to ID most of them. We sure do appreciate it.

Indeed
We would love to have all the museum curators visit.

And I would certainly buy a guide to the Ant lions and Owl flies of the US.

Agreed!
I'm another prospective purchaser for a guide to the Antlions and Owlflies. Would like to put in a word for emphasis on those things observers and photographers can see without having to capture the critter and turn it upside down, including illustrations from angles most often visible (dorsal and lateral views, mostly.) I spend a lot of time in the field with a camera, but I'm not a collector and do not catch (even to catch-and-release) what I photograph.

I understand that some taxa cannot be identified this way--but some can, and it's a great delight to the amateur naturalist when something like an Owlfly can be tracked down as far as the genus.

And I can always justify another book...
