Northern Walking sticks (Family Phasmidae) Diapheromera femorata
These are male and female, and they are mating. The insects feed on foliage of deciduous trees and shrubs, expecially oaks aqnd hazelnuts. After mating, the female (larger of the two pictured) drops eggs singly, which overwinter in leaf litter on the ground. The following spring they hatch, and the little ones climb trees or shrubs for their first meal. The cycle is then complete.
