Syrphid larva?
I'm thinking this is the larva of one of the aphid-eating syrphid flies.

Perhaps, we should ask Martin to go through our unidentified Syrphid larvae. We have several similar to this, (with some sort of fringe around the edges) such as:

Also, if you are certain about the species ID, I will create a new page, where this one can sit in splendid isolation.

Can you give some idea of size?
We're thinking this might be a tortoise beetle larva or something like it, but before we go searching, it would be nice to know the size to know if we are even in the ballpark on this.
