Unidentified Orb Weaving Spider - Argiope florida

Unidentified Orb Weaving Spider - Argiope florida
Lake Talquin State Forest, Leon County, Florida, USA
September 18, 2004
This orb-weaving spider was shot at Lake Talquin State Forest in Leon County, Florida, not far from the Georgia border. Its web was in an open, scrubby area. I have been unable to identify it; please help. A second image showing the front end of the spider more clearly follows.

Any chance it's the silver argiope, middle picture here . Check also in the guide here at (1). Did the orb web have a large X in the middle?

No X in the web that I saw; it looked like a generic orb weaver web. The spider does look like it might at least be a relative of the silver argiope, though, so at least that's somewhere to start digging further. Thanks.

Definitely Argiope,
and it closely matches a picture in Florida's Fabulous Spiders (1) of Argiope floridana, Silver-backed Argiope, aka Florida Garden Spider. See this link Animals of the Florida Scrub

I didn't notice an X in the web. It looked more like the web of a generic orb-weaver. I agree, though, that the spider does look like at least a close relative of the silver argiope. At least that gives me somewhere to start digging further. Thanks.
