Brown Recluse??? - Loxosceles reclusa

Brown Recluse??? - Loxosceles reclusa
Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee, USA
October 25, 2012
Size: Dime
Have seen a lot of these in my house. I haven't been able to get close or get a pic until now, but from far away it looks like most of the other spiders I've found in my house. Most I find are already dead (starved is my guess) along the walls. This one was under my recliner when I killed it. Finally managed to kill one without destroying it so I could take a pic. To me it looks a lot like a Brown Recluse. Usually see these guys when moving stuff on the floor (toys, clothes, etc.)Size of this one as show with legs curled up is about size of a Dime. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

yep
brown recluse. i suggest giving the house a good look over. there is never just one recluse. where there is one there is more. bare in mind the reputation of these spiders is exaggerated. yes, they do contain a toxin in their venom capable of destroying tissue and leaving nasty wounds, however, most bites are not this extreme and people fully recover without any treatment. bites are rare even in homes infested w/ these spiders.

Thanks
Wow that was fast. I was pretty sure it was a Brown Recluse. I've been in this house for 4 years and they have been here the whole time. There are definitely more in the house. I mostly see them dead along the baseboards of the walls. TN seems to be pretty spider friendly as I've seen more here than anywhere else I've lived. Also thanks for pointing out that its not as bad as it sounds. I was under the impression that a bite pretty much had a 100% chance of going really bad. I have found some info that has said that probably only 10% require medical attention at all and only a small percentage of those turn into what you see pics of online.

glue traps
glue traps along the baseboards is a great means of control. TN is in the heart of brown recluse territory. I am at the northern edge of their range and they are abundant, yet if u go further north they are absent.
