Tick Larva - dog? - Dermacentor

Tick Larva - dog? - Dermacentor
Pelham, Massachusetts, USA
October 26, 2012
Size: 1mm
A student in my class got covered with seed ticks (larvae), probably a thousand or so. I've only seen these larval nests down in Tennessee where they're common as dirt in July/August -typically lone star ticks. Any idea on this species? The two common adult ticks here in MA are dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and deer/black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis), I would guess this looks more like a small dog tick than deer tick, but anyone know for sure? Do all tick species have these egg/larval balls?

Probable Dermacentor
Looks like a Dermacentor larva. Most likely D. variabilis

Moved from ID Request.

Looks like a larval tick to me. Others will be able to say for sure.
