Big Ground Beetle - Scarites

Big Ground Beetle - Scarites
New Jersey, USA
A few years ago I found this huge ground beetle, that looked like a giant version of the smaller ones I find in my yard. I kept the big one as a pet (named Champ) until he of old age, then I saved him. Is he a larger species or is he just some sort of giant mutant?

Scarites
The one on the right is probably S. subterraneus and the left one is probably S. vicinus.
