Carpenter or mimic? - Megachile xylocopoides

Carpenter or mimic? - Megachile xylocopoides
West Cape May, Triangle Park, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA
October 2, 2012
I identified this as a European Carpenter Bee, however I was told it might actually be a member of Megachile xylocopoides (carpenter mimic). Apparently there are only 3 documented records for this species in New Jersey, so I would like to know if I've stumbled upon something worth recording/submitting. Thanks!

Yes, it's an interesting record of M. xylocopoides
It's not clear if this species has recently colonized southern NJ or if it has long been present but simply overlooked (I suspect the former).

Thanks for the mimic ID
Thanks John! Is the sighting as rare as I was led to believe? Or are they found annually in the state?

I just want to make sure it's not worth writing up a note for a journal or something along those lines.

They now seem regular but there are no historical
records. Therefore it is worth writing up as a range extension. I'm happy to contribute to such a note.
