Oncopeltus sandarachatus
I believe this is
Oncopeltus sandarachatus
, a species often mislabelled with
O. fasciatus
, more common accross US.
After reviewing a whole bunch of observations from Florida, I got convinced that though not all, most of "
O. fasciatus
" obs. from the area actually refer to this species rather.
Species currently missing from BG database; both species are easier to identify on ventral view, I found a few features that might help discriminating both :
-
O. sandarachatus
most often has light pattern on the head bright red, constrating to the pale orange/yellow from the rest of the body (
O. fasciatus
usually vivid orange on both head and body
-
O. sandarachatus
often bears a thin light "collar" at the anterior margin of the pronotum, always lacking in
O. fasciatus
.
- pronotal dark pattern is more extended on the posterior pronotal margin in
O. sandarachatus
, even reaching the lateral margins in the type. Often greater than the width of the scutellum. In
O. fasciatus
, posterior pronotal angles are never dark, dark pronotal pattern about as wide as scutellum, giving the impression the pattern continues from one to the other, giving an overall "diamond" shape, whereas the diamond is kind of "broken" in
O. sandarachatus
. Lateral margins of the pronotal dark pattern tend to be convex in
O. fasciatus
, concave in
O. sandarachatus
.
Here is figured the type specimen
of
O. sandarachatus
